The Perth Mint’s own mintage records confirm the 1996 proof issue had a maximum authorised mintage of 2,500, but only 1,144 were actually sold.

very low surviving numbers, 
many palladium coins were reportedly melted during late-1990s palladium shortages, 
and the series was discontinued after only a few years.
